The mention of Chincoteague recalls images of wild ponies in many people's minds.  The island town of Chincoteague, Virginia is home to the herd of wild ponies made famous in Marguerite's Henry's Misty of Chincoteague.  The ponies actually live on adjacent Assateague Island and swim across the channel each year for the Chincoteague Fire Company's annual pony auction in July.

Although the ponies are a main attraction, Chincoteague has lots more to offer.  The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is a birder's paradise and with trails for hikers and bikers and lots of opportunities for photographers.  Beyond the Wildlife Refuge is Assateague National Seashore with miles of undisturbed beaches to be enjoyed.

The island has many restaurants and shops and fun things for the family like miniature golf.  The town also hosts several events throughout the year and an active concert series at the Chincoteague Center.

The island location provides LOTS of waterfront and waterview properties.  There's a mix of housing available with everything from large traditional homes to contemporary condo units.  Many people live on the island year round, but there are also a lot of vacation rental properties.
